Shani Pradosh

Pradosha17:43 – 20:26
Why this date, and from which text

Taken on the day whose pradosha window — the first three muhurtas of the night — the Trayodashi pervades.

Kane, History of Dharmasastra V.i p.73: "all vratas to be performed in the evening or night have to be performed on the tithi existing in the evening or night even though it may be mixed up (viddha) with another tithi."

The vara runs sunrise to sunrise, so the pradosha window — which opens at sunset — belongs to the weekday of its own civil date. Naming a Pradosh after that weekday (Soma, Bhauma, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Ravi) is popular usage, not a rule from a located text.

Pradosha (first three nocturnal muhurtas): Dharma Sindhu, Samanya-Paribhasha (digest, unversed): "Nakta vrata is to consume a single meal three muhurtas after Sunset called Pradosha kaala" - three nocturnal muhurtas from sunset, i.e. one fifth of the night arc.

Ravi (Bhanu) Pradosh

Pradosha18:07 – 20:42
Why this date, and from which text

The Trayodashi pervades pradosha on both candidate days; the day it covers more of is taken.

Kane, History of Dharmasastra V.i p.73: "all vratas to be performed in the evening or night have to be performed on the tithi existing in the evening or night even though it may be mixed up (viddha) with another tithi."

TIE-BREAK, LABELLED AS A MODERN HEURISTIC, NOT A VERSE: where the tithi pervades the prescribed window on two consecutive days the day with the greater overlap is taken. No classical text grades pervasion this way; the graded rule is stated only by modern panchang-makers. It is used here solely to make a genuine two-candidate case deterministic.
