Griha Pravesh Muhurat

Griha Pravesh Muhurat is the date and time chosen to enter a new home for the first time, so the household begins under favourable panchang conditions. This finder scans every day in the range you give, for your city, and ranks that day's auspicious Choghadiya slots and its Abhijit Muhurta from 0 to 100. Griha Pravesh is one of the two rites here for which the finder also checks Guru and Shukra asta, and one of the six for which it reports the Panchaka state.

No results found.
Raman ranks the fortification of the Lagna above all five angas. Computing it needs an ascendant per window, so the range is limited to 31 days.

What makes an auspicious Griha Pravesh date

A Griha Pravesh date is judged on the same five limbs of the panchang as any other election, with the nakshatra and weekday sets that belong to this rite. The eleven nakshatras this finder scores as favourable for entering a home are Rohini, Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha, and its favourable weekdays are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Each factor below moves the day's score rather than settling the date by itself, and every day in the result lists the ones that fired on it. A day that ranks high usually has the nakshatra, the tithi and the weekday agreeing, not just one of the three.

  • Nakshatra: the eleven listed above are the finder's favourable set; a Ganda Moola junction nakshatra costs the day points.
  • Tithi: favourable tithis like the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th are used, while the Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya are avoided.
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday score as favourable; Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday score lower.
  • Guru and Shukra asta: checked for this rite, and any day on which Jupiter or Venus is combust is flagged and marked down.
  • Panchaka: reported for Griha Pravesh, because Raman restricts the Panchaka check to the major samskaras rather than applying it to everything.
  • Month: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are the classically favoured months, and Chaturmas and Kharmas are avoided - but these are month-level rules the finder does not apply, so check them yourself.

Three types of Griha Pravesh

The tradition names three occasions of entering a house, and they are not equally demanding. The first entry into a newly built home is the one for which a muhurat is chosen most carefully; a re-entry after an absence or after repairs is treated more lightly.

Which of the three you are performing is a distinction the tradition makes, not a setting in this tool: the finder scores a Griha Pravesh date the same way in all three cases. What changes is how much care you take over the result, since an Apoorva entry is the one the texts treat most seriously.

  • Apoorva - the very first entry into a brand-new house built on fresh land; this needs the most careful muhurat.
  • Sapoorva - re-entering your own house after returning from a long journey or absence.
  • Dwandva (Dwandav) - re-entering a house after repairs, renovation or rebuilding following damage.

What the finder checks, and what it leaves to you

The finder is a day-by-day scanner. For each date in your range it computes the panchang for your city, scores the day, then offers only the day's auspicious and neutral Choghadiya slots and its Abhijit Muhurta, which is skipped on Wednesday. A window that overlaps Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda or Gulika Kaal, or that touches a tithi-gandanta band, is capped at 40, marked avoid and dropped from the recommended list, so a housewarming cannot be scheduled inside one.

What it does not do is reason about months. Chaturmas, the two Kharmas, Adhik Maas, Pitru Paksha and Holashtak are all month-level or fortnight-level periods, and the finder has no channel for them, so days inside them can still be returned. Those remain yours to check - the almanac panel on the Panchang page names the running lunar month and whether it is adhika. Panchaka and Guru/Shukra asta are the exceptions, because both resolve on a single day, and both are computed and shown.

How to find your Griha Pravesh Muhurat

  1. Set your city: Choose your city so sunrise, sunset and planetary positions are computed for your exact location.
  2. Pick a date range: Enter the earliest and latest dates you could move in, and the finder scans every day in between.
  3. Review the ranked dates: The best housewarming dates and time windows are ranked by their tithi, nakshatra, weekday and yoga, each showing the factors behind its score.
  4. Check the month yourself: Before fixing the date, confirm it does not fall in Chaturmas, Kharmas, Adhik Maas or Pitru Paksha - the finder scores single days and does not apply month-level bars.

Frequently asked questions

Which months are best for Griha Pravesh?

Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are the classically recommended months. Griha Pravesh is avoided during Chaturmas (roughly Ashadha to Kartik) and during Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces. These are month-level rules, so this day-by-day finder does not apply them - check the running lunar month yourself before fixing a date.

Can Griha Pravesh be done on any day of the week?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the favourable weekdays this finder scores for housewarming. Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday are not in that set and score lower, so a day on one of them will usually rank below an equivalent day on a favourable weekday.

What should I avoid when picking a housewarming date?

Avoid the Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th), Amavasya, a Ganda Moola nakshatra, and any window overlapping Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda or Gulika Kaal, which the finder blocks outright. Traditionally Pitru Paksha, Adhik Maas and Holashtak are avoided too, but those are month-level or fortnight-level periods that the finder does not apply.

Which nakshatras does this finder use for Griha Pravesh?

Eleven: Rohini, Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. A day whose Moon falls in one of these gains points. The set is specific to this rite - marriage, vehicle purchase and naming each use a different one in the same finder.

Does the tool check Guru and Shukra asta for Griha Pravesh?

Yes. Griha Pravesh is one of the rites for which this finder runs the combustion check, so any day on which Jupiter or Venus is combust is flagged and scored down. The day is not removed from the list - it is shown with the flag, so you can weigh it yourself.

What is Panchaka, and is it applied here?

Panchaka is a five-fold blemish read from the Moon's sign against the weekday. It is reported for Griha Pravesh, because Raman's Muhurtha ch. III restricts the Panchaka check to the major samskaras - marriage, nuptials, entry into a new house and the like - rather than applying it to ordinary matters. It appears in the Panchanga Shuddhi panel beside the day's score.
