What a divisional chart is

A divisional chart, or varga, is built by cutting each 30 degree sign into a fixed number of equal parts and mapping each part onto a sign of the zodiac; the Dth chart is the set of signs the nine grahas and the ascendant land in under that division. This page computes 23 of them from one set of birth data, from the D1 rashi chart down to the D144, and shows each graha's varga sign, house, degree and dignity in a sortable table.

The arithmetic is the whole of it. A graha's varga sign depends on two things only: its degree within its own sign, and the counting rule that division uses. Nothing else about the base chart carries over. That is why a graha at 3 degrees of Aries and a graha at 3 degrees of Sagittarius are placed by the same procedure from different starting signs, and why a varga chart is not a second chart so much as a second reading of the same longitudes.

Sixteen from BPHS chapter 6, and seven from outside it

Sixteen of the 23 are the shodashavarga of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra chapter 6: D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45 and D60. Each carries the signification that chapter assigns it, which is why the selector labels them as it does - Rashi for body and overall life, Hora for wealth, Drekkana for siblings and courage, Navamsa for marriage and dharma, Dasamsa for career, Dwadasamsa for parents, Trimsamsa for misfortune and character, Shashtiamsa for karma.

The remaining seven, D5, D6, D8, D11, D81, D108 and D144, sit outside those sixteen, and the page badges them so. Parashara gives no construction rule for them, so the fivefold, sixfold, eightfold and elevenfold divisions are described here structurally, by the size of their part, rather than by a signification no classical text assigns. Where a modern authority does supply a reading or a construction, the page names that author instead of presenting the reading as classical.

How the counting rules differ

Not every division counts from the same starting sign, and the differences are not cosmetic. The navamsa cuts nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes and counts from the sign itself in a movable sign, from its 9th in a fixed sign and from its 5th in a dual sign.

The dasamsa cuts ten parts of 3 degrees and counts from the sign itself in an odd sign and from its 9th in an even sign. The dwadasamsa's twelve parts of 2 degrees 30 minutes simply run forward from the sign itself.

The trimsamsa is not an equal division at all: it splits a sign into stretches of 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees mapped to the own-signs of the five non-luminous grahas, with the order reversed in an even sign. The shashtiamsa takes sixty parts of 0 degrees 30 minutes counted forward from the sign, each carrying a named amsa deity. Every chart on this page states its own construction in one sentence beneath the title, so the rule being applied is never left implicit.

Where the sources disagree, the page says so

The eleventh division is the clearest case. It is not one chart: Sanjay Rath distinguishes the Rudramsa, which some call Para Amsa, from a differently built D11 called the Labhamsa.

This app computes the Rudramsa, by the anti-zodiacal rule - count from Aries to the occupied sign, count that same number back from Aries, and run the eleven parts of 2 degrees 43 minutes 38 seconds forward from the sign so found. Its meaning is contested as well, read by some for destruction and by others for gains, and the app does not choose between them.

The D81 carries a different kind of note. The name is the construction, nava-navamsa or nine by nine, so the chart is composed as the navamsa of the navamsa, following Sanjay Rath and matching Jagannatha Hora's default. Until August 2026 this app instead counted 81 equal arcs forward from the occupied sign, a construction no published source uses. That arithmetic remains selectable from the method dropdown, labelled as superseded, so an earlier reading can be reproduced rather than silently rewritten.

A varga magnifies whatever error is in the birth time

Because each division cuts the same 30 degrees into more parts, the higher vargas are far more sensitive to the recorded minute than the rashi chart is. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. A navamsa part is 3 degrees 20 minutes wide, so the lagna crosses one roughly every thirteen minutes. A shashtiamsa part is 0 degrees 30 minutes, crossed in about two minutes. A D144 part is 12.5 arc-minutes, crossed in under a minute.

That is the honest limit on the D60 and the D144. If your birth time is recorded to the nearest five minutes, those charts are not resolved by your data whatever the arithmetic prints. The grahas other than the Moon move slowly enough that their varga signs are stable across an uncertain minute or two; the ascendant, and therefore every house number in every varga, is not.

What is a divisional chart or varga?

What is the D9 navamsa used for?
BPHS chapter 6 assigns the navamsa to marriage and dharma, and this app carries that signification. Its construction is nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes per sign, counted from the sign itself for a movable sign, from its 9th for a fixed sign and from its 5th for a dual sign. A pada of a nakshatra is the same arc as a navamsa, which is why the two divisions line up exactly.
Why does this page compute 23 charts instead of 16?
Because seven divisions in circulation are not part of the BPHS sixteen and are still asked for by practitioners: D5, D6, D8, D11, D81, D108 and D144. They are computed and clearly badged as outside the shodashavarga. Where no classical rule exists, their description states the size of the division rather than assigning a signification no text supports.
Why did my D81 chart change?
Because the construction was corrected in August 2026. The name nava-navamsa is the construction, nine by nine, so the chart is now composed as the navamsa of the navamsa, matching Sanjay Rath and Jagannatha Hora's default. The older arithmetic counted 81 equal arcs forward from the occupied sign, which no published source uses. That older method is still selectable and labelled as superseded so an earlier reading can be reproduced.
What is the difference between the Rudramsa and the Labhamsa?
They are two different eleventh-division charts. Sanjay Rath distinguishes the Rudramsa, which some call Para Amsa, from a differently constructed D11 called the Labhamsa. This app computes the Rudramsa by an anti-zodiacal rule: count from Aries to the occupied sign, count the same number back from Aries, and run eleven parts of 2 degrees 43 minutes 38 seconds forward from the sign so found. How reliable is the D60 if my birth time is approximate?
A shashtiamsa part is 0 degrees 30 minutes wide and the ascendant crosses one about every two minutes, so a birth time recorded to the nearest five minutes cannot resolve the D60 ascendant or its house numbers. The slower grahas keep their D60 signs across such an interval, but the chart as a whole should not be read as settled unless the birth time is known to the minute.
Are divisional charts computed from the same positions as the main chart?
Yes. All 23 are derived from the same sidereal longitudes computed for your birth data, on the Lahiri ayanamsha by default and to sub-arcsecond precision. No separate calculation or approximation is involved: a varga sign is a function of the graha's degree within its sign and the counting rule of that division.
