Nadi Dosh (Nadi Koota) Calculator

Nadi Dosh is the most heavily weighted flaw in Ashtakoot Guna Milan, the eight-fold system used to match a couple's horoscopes for marriage. It arises when both partners fall in the same Nadi — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — decided by each person's Janma nakshatra, which scores the Nadi koota at 0 out of 8. This free calculator takes both people's birth details, shows each one's Moon sign and nakshatra, gives the Nadi koota score, and rolls it into the overall 36-point Guna Milan match.

Person 2

The three Nadis and how the koota is scored

Every person's Janma nakshatra (birth star) places them in one of three Nadis. Nadi carries the highest weight of the eight kootas — up to 8 of the 36 Guna Milan points. When the partners fall in different Nadis the pair earns the full 8 points; when both share the same Nadi the koota scores 0, and that is a Nadi Dosh.

  • Aadi (Vata) Nadi: Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Madhya (Pitta) Nadi: Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada.
  • Antya (Kapha) Nadi: Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati.
  • Different Nadis score 8 of 8; the same Nadi scores 0 of 8 and forms a Nadi Dosh.

What Nadi Dosh means and its classical exceptions

Because Nadi is linked in the texts to health, constitution and progeny (santan), sharing the same Nadi is treated as the most serious mismatch in Ashtakoot. The shastras also record several exceptions (Nadi Dosh parihar) under which the flaw is held to be nullified, so a same-Nadi result is read in context rather than as an automatic bar.

  • Both partners share the same Nadi but were born under different nakshatras.
  • The same birth nakshatra but a different pada (quarter), or different Moon signs.
  • The couple's Rashi lords are the same or mutual friends.
  • A Nadi score of 0 makes the commonly used 18-of-36 pass mark harder to reach, so the overall Guna Milan is judged alongside the other seven kootas.

How to check Nadi Dosh

  1. Enter both people's birth details: Add each partner's date, time and place of birth so the tool can find their Moon sign and Janma nakshatra.
  2. Read the Nadi koota result: See each person's Nadi and whether they share one — the tool shows the Nadi koota score out of 8 and flags any Nadi Dosh.
  3. Review the full Guna Milan: Check the overall 36-point Ashtakoot score to see how the match reads across all eight kootas, not Nadi alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nadi Dosh?

Nadi Dosh occurs when both partners have the same Nadi — Aadi, Madhya or Antya — determined by their birth nakshatra. In Ashtakoot Guna Milan this scores 0 out of 8 and is considered unfavourable, chiefly for health and progeny.

How many points is the Nadi koota worth?

Nadi is the highest-weighted of the eight kootas, worth up to 8 of the 36 total Guna Milan points. Different Nadis earn the full 8, while the same Nadi scores 0 and forms a Nadi Dosh.

Does Nadi Dosh mean a marriage cannot happen?

No. Classical texts list several exceptions (parihar) that nullify the dosh, and the match is judged on all eight kootas together, not on Nadi alone. Treat a same-Nadi result as a prompt to consult an astrologer, not a final verdict.
