What Is a Kundli? A Beginner's Guide to the Vedic Birth Chart
A Kundli — also called a Janam Kundali or birth chart — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact time and place you were born. In Vedic astrology it is the foundation of every prediction: the positions of the nine grahas across the twelve signs and houses describe your personality, strengths, challenges and life timing.
The building blocks of a Kundli
Every Kundli is built from a few core ingredients. Understanding them makes the chart far less mysterious.
- Nine grahas (planets): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
- Twelve rashis (signs): from Aries (Mesha) to Pisces (Meena), each 30° of the zodiac.
- Twelve bhavas (houses): life areas such as self, wealth, siblings, home, children, career and marriage.
- Twenty-seven nakshatras (lunar mansions): finer 13°20′ divisions that add depth, especially for the Moon.
Sidereal vs tropical: why the ayanamsha matters
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed against the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the seasons. The difference between them is the ayanamsha (about 24° today). AstroZivi uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha by default, the standard used by the Indian government's calendar, and computes positions with the Swiss Ephemeris for sub-arcsecond accuracy.
Lagna (Ascendant): the most personal point
The Lagna, or rising sign, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why an accurate birth time matters so much — two people born the same day can have very different charts. The Lagna anchors the twelve houses and colours your whole personality.

Only after that should you explore divisional charts, dashas and yogas. Generating an accurate chart is the first step — everything else builds on it.

Do I need my exact birth time for a Kundli?
Yes, ideally to the minute. The Lagna and house positions change roughly every two hours, so an accurate time gives a far more reliable chart. If your time is uncertain, the Moon-based readings are still useful.
What is the difference between a Kundli and a horoscope?
A Kundli is your full personal birth chart. A daily horoscope (rashifal) is a general prediction for one Moon sign. The Kundli is specific to you; the horoscope is broad.
Is a Kundli the same in Vedic and Western astrology?
The concept is similar, but Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (with an ayanamsha correction) and whole-sign houses, so planetary signs often differ from a Western chart of the same birth.
