Atmakaraka (Chara Karaka) Calculator

In Jaimini astrology the Chara Karakas are temporary significators assigned by the degree a planet holds within its sign. The planet with the highest degree becomes your Atmakaraka — the significator of the soul — and this tool ranks all seven or eight karakas down to the Darakaraka from your birth chart.

Find your Atmakaraka and Chara Karakas

What is the Atmakaraka?

Atmakaraka means 'significator of the soul' (atma = soul). In Jaimini astrology it is treated as the single most important planet in the chart, often compared to a king who rules over the other planets and karakas. It is not fixed to any one planet: whichever of the seven (or eight) planets holds the highest degree within its sign becomes your Atmakaraka.

The Atmakaraka is read as the soul's strongest desire and the central karmic lesson carried into this life. Its sign in the Navamsa (D9) is called the Karakamsha, an important reference point from which much of Jaimini prediction is derived.

The seven or eight Chara Karakas

Chara ('movable') karakas are ranked purely by planetary degree, ignoring sign and house. Only the degrees within the sign (0° to 30°) are compared — the highest is the Atmakaraka and the lowest is the Darakaraka. The seven-karaka scheme uses the Sun through Saturn; the eight-karaka scheme also includes Rahu, whose degree is counted as 30 minus its longitude because it moves in reverse, and which adds a separate Pitrikaraka.

  • Atmakaraka (AK) — the soul, the self and the highest karmic aim
  • Amatyakaraka (AmK) — career, purpose and the 'minister' to the soul
  • Bhratrikaraka (BK) — siblings, courage and guidance
  • Matrikaraka (MK) — mother, home and emotional life
  • Pitrikaraka (PiK) — father (used only in the eight-karaka scheme)
  • Putrakaraka (PK) — children, creativity and past-life merit
  • Gnatikaraka (GK) — relatives, rivals and obstacles
  • Darakaraka (DK) — spouse and partnerships

How to find your Atmakaraka

  1. Enter birth details: Provide accurate date, time and place of birth so each planet's exact degree within its sign is calculated.
  2. Read the Atmakaraka: The planet holding the highest degree is shown as your Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul.
  3. Review all karakas: See the full list of Chara Karakas ranked by degree, from Atmakaraka down to Darakaraka.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Atmakaraka?

It is the 'significator of the soul' — the planet holding the highest degree in your chart. In Jaimini astrology it is treated as the most important planet, revealing your deepest desire and central karmic lesson.

How is the Atmakaraka calculated?

Compare the degrees each planet holds within its sign (0° to 30°), ignoring which sign or house it occupies. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka; if Rahu is included, its degree is taken as 30 minus its longitude because it moves backward.

What is the difference between the seven and eight karaka schemes?

The seven-karaka scheme ranks the Sun through Saturn, while the eight-karaka scheme also includes Rahu and adds a separate Pitrikaraka (father). Both are used in practice; this tool shows the karakas ordered by degree.
